UI Artist (Part-Time)

Chuhai Labs is looking for a freelance UI artist to join our team to help us push forward an exciting new project.

 

Chuhai Labs is an indie developer founded in 2020 as a brand of Vitei Backroom by Nintendo alumnus Giles Goddard who developed classic titles including Star Fox, 1080 Snowboarding, Super Mario 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Chuhai Labs is located in the beautiful city of Kyoto, Japan.

What We Need You To Do:

  • Help design all UI concepts and style guides, aiding the Art Director and Technical Artist to define the direction of all UI for the game.

  • Create every graphic user interface (menus, HUD, dialog boxes) in the game from scratch, across a wide variety that consistently complements the game’s striking stylized aesthetic.

  • Work closely with technical art and engineering teams to identify and troubleshoot UI issues on target platforms, and ensure all assets are successfully integrated into the game.

  • Work with the Lead Artist and Producer to ensure all UI-related tasks are properly estimated and managed.

  • Define, together with discipline leaders, the user experience appropriate to the game and audience through UI interactivity.

  • Be responsible for and create wireframes and prototypes of UI layout for the entire game, to ensure a consistent, cohesive and maximally usable UI experience for users.

  • Use Unity to integrate UI assets into the project.

Required Experience & Knowledge:

  • 3+ years of commercial game development experience

  • Have shipped at least one commercial game

  • Proficient and comfortable using the Unity game engine

  • Proven work experience as a UI/UX designer

  • Experience working with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar vector/raster design tools.

  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and proactive about expanding knowledge and learning new skills

  • Experience working with version control software (such as Perforce, Git etc.)

Preferred Attributes:

  • 5+ years of commercial game development experience

  • Multiple shipped commercial games on a variety of platforms, particularly home consoles

  • Currently resides in Japan or similar time zone
